At first Andy played poker at the Junior Common Room where players like Donnacha O’Dea and Padraig Parkinson used to play and then he played at Dublin Casino Griffin. It is said he started playing there because of the free coffee and free food.

He was beaten at the final table of the World Series of Poker main event by Stu Ungar. It is said that Ungar got lucky and defeated Black with an AQ against an AK, however, Black denies the fact saying it was only a stunt.

Next year, Black participated again at the WSOP and lost everything. After that he lived for almost 5 years at a semi Buddhist monastery in England. On 2004, Andy Black went back to poker scenario by winning Irish poker tournaments and getting fifth place at the 2005 WSOP taking home 1.75 million dollars.

Then he participated and won money at the European Poker Tour and the World Poker Tour. He won the first place at the Irish Poker Tour. His winnings in poker competitions, on 2009, were about 4.1 million dollars.
